What One Small Kind Act Can Do!

This was one of my newsletters that folks said I should make into a blog post...so...here it is!  It truly shows how one small act of kindness can make a huge impact!  Warning..you might need a kleenex or two :)

I have a quick story to tell and then you'll see why I told it.  Trust me..it's very emotional for me to write about.

It was 1977 and I was 11 years old and seriously a good kid.  I was always busy doing odd jobs to help  pay for my school clothes and other basic necessities...but I was like most kids...I still  "wanted, wanted, wanted".

I spent all my spare time with a paper route, babysitting, shoveling snow in the winter, mowing lawns in the summer..but my favorite thing to do was to help the old folks.

One of my favorite little old ladies was Mrs. A.  She was just so grateful for anything I did.   She always wanted to give me something for any little nice thing I did.

If I brought the newspaper in the house, she'd give me a nickel.  If I moved a piece of furniture across the room for her...she'd insist on giving me a nickel.  I thought that was nice..but..geez, a nickel?

One day near Christmas time, I came home from school and was ready to deliver the newspapers.

My mom told me that I didn't need to deliver Mrs. A's paper.  I said, why?!?!  She said she had passed away the night before.

Word in the "neighborhood" was that she had been eating her dinner at the time of passing.

What was her dinner?  Cat food.  Her cupboards?  More cat food!  Did she have a cat?  No!  Was she old and eccentric? No...she was POOR!  Yet, she gave me nickels and I thought "big deal"?!?!

That night I buried my face in my pillow and cried.  I realized what a sacrifice of love she had made.  I was mortified to think I had thought "big deal".

Each passing year brings with it greater feelings of thanks and gratitude for this beautiful expression of love and sacrifice.  Kind of like the story of the babe in the manger over 2,000 years ago.

I have often reflected on this experience over the years and it is one of the reasons we give to the FoodBank as well as provide for Pediatric needs/surgeries.  Some things just stay with you for life.

God bless you, Mrs. A.  Your beautiful sacrifice of love was one of the reasons we started an entire Giving Mission.  See what one kind act can do? :)

May God bless all of you!  Mrs. A was like family to me and so are you!  I send my love!
